I think the key aspect is that the surface must be clean and flat in order for the suction to hold
The design of the suction devices themselves is pretty ingenious compared to other devices I have seen: you apply to the surface, than twist the knob to increase the depression inside, thereby increasing suction.However, I have not tried heavier weights like the other reviewer seems to have attempted.(5lbs is a lot...)
Pros:
1. Solidly built
2. Suction works well; the attachment system is a bit complicated but ingenious
3. Nice chrome appearance
Cons:
1. The triangular design is somewhat akward since the corners become wasted space
